Jayan come to join a nationalized bank-his first posting. The bank has a curious mélange of characters-3 youths who has weaknesses-one for money, the second for boos, and the third for girls. Jayan is admitted to the residence of the three with reluctance from the part of the three. All four finally become friends.
They have neighbors. A Christian family. A businessman father-Paul, a housewife mother and a kid-merin. This family in good terms with the foursome bachelor group.
One fine morning Merin is admitted to the hospital with high fever and she is dead. This is a devastating blow to all. Paul thereafter makes it a habit to visit her grave before he reach home from his business place.
One day Jayan has two guests. They come to the bank to see him. They embrace and Jayan takes them to his house and all of them have good time. They are his childhood friends and they run a workshop of their own in their native place.
The bank is robbed. One Monday morning the news breaks out. Police comes to Jayan’s house and they take Jayan’s friend into their custody for interrogation. They ask for Jayan also. The three bank friends intimated Jayan about this and Jayan goes underground.
From Paul’s brother, who is a police sub-inspector they all come to know that the police has taken into custody the two friends of Jayan in the light of an anonymous letter which has a news clips of a bank robbery that happened some 5 years back. Jayan’s friends are the convicted for that bank robbery and they are out on parole. There is a note to the newspaper clip that the two criminals are the friends of Jayan and they have done the robbery with the help of an insider that is Jayan.
Jayan enters the scene secretly at night. He is confronted by his bank friends and Paul. To them he reveals his past.
He was an orphan as well as the other two. They were raised by a woman, Devaki. Jayan, who was smart in his studies, appears for competitive exams after his graduation along-with running a used book shop in the side walk. The other two who are not so bright in their studies work as mechanics.
One day Devaki fell ill and she is diagnosed with brain tumor. The youth wants to save her. The Doctor reveals the operation cost is huge which is out of their financial limits. Jayan practically asks each and every of his contacts but could not get financial help.
Then comes a telephone call. An anonymous caller. He has information regarding Jayan’s problems and has solution to it. ROB A BANK. Nobody will lose anything since the amount is insured. He is an insider and would help him to rob the bank for a share of fifty percent of the loot. At first Jayan laughed at his weird idea. Then he discussed with his friends. All want to save their mother. At last Jayan agrees.
They rob the bank. The lift is done by the three. One supervises the operation by keeping an eye on the street and bank. The other rides the bike. Jayan is the one who carries out the difficult task-the robbery. The operation is so easy. They get away with the loot unscathed.
When they reach home, they find a dead Devaki. She committed suicide with a note on which she has scribbled that she has come to know of their plan and she would not want her sons to undertake this dangerous operation because of her. She wants them to be honest.
This makes them to change their mind. They decide to return the loot inconspicuously. Then came the anonymous call. The caller congratulates them on their victory and asks for his share. Jayan tell him they are going to return the money. The caller yells that is breach of trust and he will take his revenge on them.
Soon police approaches their house. With great effort the other two gets Jayan out of the picture. They would want someone to bail them out and fight for them. Without Jayan they could not succeed. The two gets arrested and gets convicted.
With the efflux of time Jayan gets the bank job. That is the story.
As the fruit of serious contemplation they sums up there is a villain at the bank. One who is ware of their history. He is none but the anonymous caller. They have to find him out.
Jayan goes to the old bank which he has robbed to get hold of a photo of its employees. He gets hold one. He is stunned at what he finds. There in the photo he finds the poor iyer who is a silent passive character.
So Iyer is the culprit. But how to frame him?
He shows the old photo to Paul and his bank friends. Then Paul remembers something.
One night back from a business trip he is late. But before reaching home he wants to visit his deceased child’s grave. It is night 3 am. He reaches the cemetery and finds a person retreating from the distant part of the cemetery hurriedly. Iyer is that person. That day is the exact day of loot.
So cemetery is the place Iyer has buried his loot.
They search the cemetery and find the loot hidden in one of the discarded cement coffins which is hard to reach because of the bush growth.
They intimate Paul’s brother sub-inspector of this and subsequently they plan a drama.
The next day Jayan is arrested and the news is made known at the bank. The same day an elderly priest comes to the bank requesting the presence of the bank manager on the “sevana vaaram” on the Gandhi Jayanthi day. They are planning to clean the cemetery; all the shrubs and bushes on that day with the school children and the bank manager shall start the cleaning. The bank manager who thinks the idea good okays to that.
This leaves the Iyer perspiring.
On the night of first October Iyer tries to take from the cemetery at night. He is caught red handed by the police.
Jayan’s friends are released.
N.B:The first part of the story deals with the present which include some comedy sequences and a love. The story intervals with the present day bank robbery which poins to Jayan and his friends. The second part deals with Jayan’s past, his bank robbery and how he tracks the villain.
